Do you reach for historical fiction often, but maybe not exclusively? Have you found yourself longing at times to inhabit the worlds you read about? Welcome to The Book and the Vibe, a mostly historical fiction podcast and your weekly escape from the ordinary and into the books and times that captivate us. I'm your host, Helen Gabay, and we provide spoiler-free reviews of mostly historical fiction books. Here, we give you insight into the vibe and atmosphere so that you know what kind of world you will inhabit when you pick it up. We talk about new and backlist titles and tend to favor selections filled with adventure, intrigue, and mystery. Above all else, we're in it for the joy of getting lost in a great story. You can expect three recognizable segments in most episodes intended to delight the reader, the history lover, and the traveler inside of you. After the main book review segment, we unearth the book's backstory or historical trivia in order to enhance, but never spoil, your reading experience. Then we head to the tavern for our rotating segment on topics such as travel destinations, our lives as readers, or the occasional bonus book review. And sometimes we do it with a guest. And once a month, we trade our usual format for our stacked episode, featuring three book reviews with a unifying theme. One month might take us to ancient Rome, and another into the holiday season. We may bring a stack of recommendations set in Elizabethan, England, the shadowy world of the Cold War, or look back at our top reads from the prior year. You'll be able to listen to the podcast starting in the fall of 2026 on Apple or Spotify. Or listen through our website, thebookandhevibe.com, where you can also check in to get even more immersed.
